Why a Digital Transformation Map?

Universities play a crucial role in Europe’s digital transformation. As the pace of change accelerates, institutional leaders are looking outward at the external drivers of change and inward to see how their own communities can respond and adapt, while keeping their core values intact.

Innovation and knowledge transfer are at the core of university missions, and continue to shape Europe’s digital ecosystems. Technological advancements, borne out of universities’ long-standing culture of curiosity and experimentation, have allowed for major advancements in education and research. But beyond modernising established practices, holistic and inclusive transformation requires a whole-institution approach – one that champions the university’s strategic priorities while considering the place of the institution in the transformation of its wider community.

The Digital Transformation Map is designed to provide orientation for institutional leaders on major developments in the digital space. Its repository of practice examples reflects the multiplicity and diversity of initiatives undertaken to advance transformation in Europe’s university sector, recognising that no two institutions’ priorities or pathways are identical.

The Digital Transformation Map builds on EUA’s previous works on digital transformation. As a  dynamic knowledge base, it is intended to support senior university leaders driving transformation within their institutions. The DTM addresses pressing concerns and priorities – digital sovereignty, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, as examples – and it’s content is adapted in line with the fast-evolving role of universities in the digital sphere.

Users of the DTM are welcome to share their practices or other resources that can inspire and inform the community as a whole.
